When it comes to vaginal health, many women are familiar with terms like thrush and bacterial vaginosis (BV). But what is often less understood is that both conditions are linked to the balance of your vaginal microbiome.
Your vaginal microbiome is made up of billions of bacteria, with beneficial species called Lactobacillus playing a key role. These bacteria help maintain an acidic environment by producing lactic acid, which protects against the overgrowth of harmful bacteria and yeast.
When Lactobacillus levels drop, this protective barrier weakens. The vaginal environment becomes less acidic, making it easier for imbalances to occur and this is where conditions like thrush and BV can develop.
Thrush is typically caused by an overgrowth of yeast, often leading to itching, irritation and thick discharge. BV, on the other hand, involves an overgrowth of certain bacteria and is commonly associated with a strong odour and changes in discharge. While they are different conditions, it is not uncommon for women to experience symptoms that overlap or even have both at the same time.
You might notice recurrent infections, unusual discharge, odour, irritation or discomfort. Some women experience ongoing symptoms that seem to return again and again, while others may have no obvious signs at all. Despite this, an imbalanced vaginal microbiome can still impact overall health, including fertility, inflammation and susceptibility to infection.
A range of factors can influence Lactobacillus levels and disrupt the vaginal microbiome, including antibiotics, hormonal changes, stress, diet, sexual activity and certain hygiene products.
The good news is that with the right support, balance can often be restored.
Treatment with me at the wellness centre may include targeted nutritional support, practitioner only probiotics designed to support Lactobacillus levels, herbal medicine, dietary strategies and lifestyle recommendations to help restore balance and reduce the likelihood of symptoms returning.
If you have been stuck in a cycle of repeated treatments without lasting relief, it may be time to look deeper.
Whether you are trying to conceive, experiencing recurrent infections or simply want clarity around your symptoms, our team is here to help.
