Burnout: The signs your body is asking you to slow down

Date

Burnout is often associated with job stress, but it can also stem from many parts of your life.
Burnout is physical, mental and emotional exhaustion, accompanied by a lack of motivation, negative attitude and lowered performance.

Signs of burnout:

  • Fatigue
  • Lack of interest, enthusiasm or concern
  • Irritability, frustration or anger
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Changes in eating habits
  • Tension headaches
  • Motivation has disappeared

Tangible steps to reduce burnout:

  • Sleep: This is the foundation for resetting our nervous system. Focus on consistent sleep and wake times, reducing stimulating activities before bed and creating a calming bedroom environment.
  • Set some boundaries (work/life) – it’s okay to say no
  • Eating regularly: Skipping meals or increasing caffeine can exacerbate burnout. Prioritise regular balanced meals (protein, healthy fats, carbohydrates and fibre)
  • Establish a daily routine – setting aside time for yourself
  • Move your body: Exercise is supportive for stress management. Try movement that is supportive and doesn’t leave you more exhausted (e.g. walking, pilates, yoga, stretching and gentle strength training)

Including self-care rituals to assist with burnout:

  • Sauna
  • Facial
  • Acupuncture
  • Coffee with friends
  • Reading
  • Walk

Burnout is your body’s way of telling you that the current way you’re living isn’t sustainable anymore. The answer isn’t to become more productive or to push through, it’s to find different strategies to help cope and recover.
